Carousell was founded in Singapore on 14 May 2012, by co-founders Quek Siu Rui, Lucas Ngoo, and Marcus Tan. The first item sold on Carousell was an Amazon Kindle e-reader for S$75. 

Carousell was subsequently registered as Carousell Pte. Ltd. on 2 January 2013. After that, the company received many capital investments from many large companies. As of 2021, after raising US$100 million from funding led by South Korean private equity firm STIC Investments, bringing its valuation to US$1.1 billion.

Posting and selling an item on Carousell is very easy. The seller just needs to take a picture of the item they want to sell and then write some basic information about it and post it. If anyone wants to buy it, both parties can exchange information with each other. Items are posted at affordable prices, and buyers can get a much better deal than those who buy through middlemen.

The company is present in 8 markets in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, of which in Vietnam, the Cho Tot trading website is also under Carousell.
