The mine is located in Mimika Regency, Papua and near Puncak Jaya – the highest mountain in Indonesia. The Grasberg mine complex consists of a very large open pit mine, an underground mine and four concentrators. Grasberg’s milling and concentrating complex is the largest in the world, with four crushers and two giant semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) units processing a daily average of 240,000 tonnes of ore in 2006.

The company that has the right to exploit the mine is Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI). Currently, more than 20,000 employees are working at this mine. Grasberg’s reserves at four active and one undeveloped mines are estimated at the end of 2019 at 46.4 million ounces of gold, 291 million ounces of silver, and 18.9 million tons of copper.

The 2020 production was 367,000 tonnes (809,000,000 lb) of copper, 26.4 tonnes (848,000 ozt) of gold and 106 tonnes (3,400,000 ozt) of silver. At the beginning of 2021, the mine also produced more than 1 million ounces of gold, which will continue to increase towards the end of the year.
