The award ceremony was first held in 1955 as Pekan Apresiasi Film Nasional (National Film Honor Week). At first, it was held only a few times (1955, 1960 and 1967) in honor of Indonesian films. In 1973, it was changed to the Indonesian Film Festival and became an annual event until 1992. The trophy/award was named Piala Citra (Citra Award).

From 1993–2003, the festival did not take place, because the quantity of good Indonesian movies had dropped significantly. Indonesian film producers during this period mostly created B-budget low-budget films, and many suffered damage from increasing piracy making the film market increasingly bleak. In 1992, American, Hong Kong and Taiwanese films dominated many cinemas, and low-budget films from Indonesia had less and less place.

In 2004 the Indonesian Film Festival committee launched and returned the event to an annual affair. In 2014 the Indonesian Film Board was formed and FFI changed the award statuette. In 2017 the Indonesian Film Board added two more awards for unique and creative films, raising the total to 21. In 2018 awards were given in 23 categories.

This year’s event will be held in November, with the theme of 2022 being “Women: Image, Works & Intentions”.
