Hoang Nam was born in Go Dau (Tay Ninh). At the age of 9, he was led to Binh Duong by his father to learn tennis under the guidance of tennis player Tran Duc Quynh. Thanks to his talent, hard work, and progressive spirit, plus the Becamex Binh Duong association sponsorship, he continuously won the national U.14, U.16, and U.18 championships.

At the 2013 Asian Youth Games in Nanjing (China), Hoang Nam won a gold medal in men’s singles after defeating Filipino Mendoza Zosimo (ITF 89th), despite losing in the first round. In 2013, Hoang Nam won the final of the U18 ITF Grade 2 Bangkok 2013, when Russian opponent Boris Pokotilov (103 ITF) quit due to injury. With this achievement, Hoang Nam rose 47 places, ranked 95th, becoming the first Vietnamese teenager to rank higher than 100 ITF.

At the 2015 Wimbledon youth tennis tournament, Hoang Nam stopped right in the first round of the young men’s singles event, but he and Sumit Nagal won the final of the young men’s doubles to become the first Vietnamese player to win a young Grand Slam doubles tournament.

With impressive achievements in recent times, Ly Hoang Nam has reached 231st place in the latest ranking of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). This is the highest ranking ever achieved by a player from Southeast Asia.
