Michael Christian Martinez began skating in 2005 at the SM Southmall ice rink. Due to experiencing asthmatic bronchitis at a very young age and many injuries, the early years of Martinez’s career were not very smooth. He officially debuted in the ISU Junior Grand Prix (JGP) series in the 2010–11 season. At the 2012 Crystal Skate of Romania, Martinez won his first senior international title, also a first for the Philippines.

After placing 7th at the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy – the last qualifying event for the 2014 Winter Olympics, Martinez officially earned a spot in the men’s singles figures skating competition and became the first Filipino and Southeast Asian athlete to compete in the Winter Olympics.

At the Olympics, Martinez qualified for the free skate after placing 19th in the short program with a score of 64.81 points. He scored 119.44 in the free skate and finished 19th overall with a total score of 184.25.

In November 2014, Martinez competed at the CS Warsaw Cup where he won the silver medal behind Russia’s Alexander Petrov. In 2015, he won a gold medal at the Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy, becoming the first Filipino to win the tournament.

After missing out on the opportunity to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics when he finished 8th at the CS Nebelhorn Trophy 2017, Martinez decided to retire from figure skating to return to business law studies and be an assistant in a Law Office, altogether with bodybuilding. By January 2018, Sweden relinquished its Olympic spot and he was eligible to participate in the Olympics. However, his results in this competition were not so good, with he only winning a total of 55.56 points, ranking 28th out of 30 athletes participating.

From 2018 to 2020, Martinez decided to take a break and become a coach around this time. In 2021, he officially announced his return to skating and tried to practice to win a spot to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics. However, due to his injury, Martinez decided foregoing his bid to qualify for the Nebelhorn Trophy, consequentially for the Winter Olympics.
