Ramkhamhaeng University was established in 1971 on an area of about 300 rai on Ramkhamhaeng Road, Bang Kapi District, Bangkok. It was named in honour of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great of Sukhothai. Ramkhamhaeng University has two major campuses, both in Bangkok. Freshman classes are held at Bang Na campus in Phra Khanong District. Most others classes are conducted at the main campus at Hua Mak, Bang Kapi District.

Initially, the school had 4 faculties: Faculty of Law, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Education; In 1974, three more faculties were opened, namely the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Politics and the Faculty of Economics. In 1997, the Faculty of Engineering was opened.

At the bachelor’s level, there are about 2,600 courses available, while at the master’s level have 130 courses covering the humanities and social sciences, science and technology, and health sciences. There are a total of 256 programs at all levels, including 111 bachelor’s degree programs, 8 graduate certificate programs, 23 diploma programs, 60 bachelor’s degree programs, and 30 master’s degree programs.

As of 2019, the university has about 525,000 students studying in its faculties and programs.
