Taking place over four days in August every year, the festival is inspired by the Brazilian Carnival, the Jember Fashion Carnaval uses the town’s main highway as a catwalk to show off an amazing variety of extravagant, Indonesian-influenced costumes borne by smiling dancers.

The idea for Jember Fashion Carnaval was realized by local fashion designer and educator Dynand Fariz. Initially, a world-themed fashion week known as Pekan Mode Dynand Fariz was held in 2001. In 2002, the fashion week was held around the city of Jember. This has inspired the creation of Jember Fashion Carnaval. The first Jember Fashion Carnaval was held on January 1, 2003, the same date as the founding day of Jember City. It was followed by another Jember Fashion Carnaval in August 2003. Since then the carnival is held in the month of August.

The costumes usually take on themes drawn from global events, and the carnival participants create their costumes from scratch using available materials.

JFC sits in first place of Best Carnival in Asia and the 3rd best in the world following Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro Carnival and Pasadena Flower Carnival in Los Angeles, USA. JFC has represented Indonesia and won third place in the International Carnaval de Victoria 2016, an event set in Seychelles-Africa, following Notting Hill (USA) and Reunion (France). JFC has also won multiple costume competitions worldwide, like winning the Best National Costume in the Miss Supranational event held in Poland in 3 years 2015, 2016 and 2018.
