Its predecessor was King Edward VII Medical College established in 1905 and Raffles College in 1929. The University of Malaya was established on 8 October 1949 to provide tertiary education for Malaysia and Singapore. The university grew rapidly in the first decade of its founding and established two separate campuses in 1959, one in Singapore (later the National University of Singapore) and the other in Kuala Lumpur (as the University of Malaya).

4. Universiti Putra Malaysia – ranked 143th globally:

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) formerly known as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia was founded in 1971 through the merger of Faculty of Agriculture, University Malaya and Agriculture College in Serdang. The first three founder faculties were Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Forestry and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science.

5. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia – ranked 144th globally:
