It was originally built as a cricket field under the management of Burma Athletics Association (BAA), completed construction and opened in 1930. After Myanmar gained independence in 1953, the government changed stadium name to Bogyoke Aung San Stadium to honor Myanmar’s national hero Aung San.

The stadium, which has a capacity of 40,000 people, was the largest stadium in Myanmar and was the national stadium until the mid-1980s.  in 1959–1960 for the second Southeast Asian Peninsular Games, which Yangon hosted in 1961.

While it is no longer the main venue of choice for international level competitions, the stadium is still heavily used for Myanmar National League football matches.
