Although Grab (formerly named GrabTaxi) has become popular as the cheapest and most convenient taxi and logistics services operating in numerous Asean countries including Sinagpore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Philippines and Cambodia, not many people know that it was established by two graduates – Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling from Harvard Business School and the headquarters are based in Singapore. In 2012, the two classmates partnered to promote an mobile application called MyTeksi, developed from Anthony’school project (in 2011) in an effort of solving the problem of unsatisfactory experience of using taxis in his country – Malaysia. Later, Grab was relocated and moved its headquarters  to Singapore with Anthony acquiring Singapore citizenship. 

From Malaysia, GrabTaxi has expanded to many neighbouring regions and countries such as Philippines and Singapore (2013), Ho Chi Minh City – Vietnam and Jakarta – Indonesia (2014). The company launched GrabCar in May and GrabBike services in November 2014 to meet the demand of local people in Vietnam and Indonesia. The company still continue its expansion in promoting a range of other useful services such as GrabHitch, GrabExpress, GrabFamily, JustGrab, GrabShare and GrabCar Plus.

The app is developed based on Artificial Intelligence technology, machine learning and location-sharing system operating on smartphones. These key technologies assist commuters or users to book taxis as private cars owned by licensed drivers and ensure traveling experience and services with automatic display of routes and fares.

Since 2014, in three years, the company has received an enormous amount of funding, about 340 million dollars from  Vertex Venture Holdings, Chinese venture capital firm GGV Capital, Tiger Global, SoftBank Group, China Investment Corporation, Honda, Toyota, amongst other investors.

There were approximately 10,000 bookings per day in 2013, a whopping figure reported by the company and it had 1.2 million app downloads in May 2014. Until now, the company has had about 2 million driving partners, 68 million mobile app downloads and 3.5 million rides booked per day.
