It is a source of coal discovered in 1917, with an amount of 630 million tonnes which are approximately 40 million years old. All the mining areas belong to the Royal Forest Department, covering around 20,000 rai of land.

The mine opened in 1978, is also the largest coal mine in Thailand with an output of 16 million tons of coal per year.

The coal can be used for approximately another 50 years. On the coal mining areas, there are several coal-fred power plants.

The coal mine’s output is 16 million tons per year, accounting for 70% of Thailand’s total coal production. All lignite produced from the mine is supplied to the 2400 MW Mae Moh power plant, which is providing 15% of Thailand’s total electricity demand. The total geological and economic lignite reserves are about 1,140 million tons and 825 tons of exploitable coal reserves, respectively.
