Solar energy is an abundant energy source that human beings have used since ancient times. This energy source is also considered a green energy source because it can be used as an alternative to fossil fuel sources, contributing to reducing environmental pollution and the greenhouse effect. Because of these positive benefits, the use of electricity from solar energy is gaining more and more attention, therefore the Philippine government has taken the lead in using solar electricity to operate the Narvacan Farmers Market in thí country.

On March 4, the Narvacan Farmers Market was officially inaugurated at Barangay San Antonio, Narvacan in Ilocos Sur. This is the first public market in the Philippines as well as in Southeast Asia to be operated entirely by solar energy sources. President Duterte, who led the inauguration, said that this market will bring bright hopes and great opportunities to businesses and consumers not only in Marvacan but also from other neighboring areas.

There is also an electric charging station for e-jeepneys, which significantly reduce carbon emissions and lessen the reliance on fossil fuels for the municipality.

Completed at a time when the Philippines is facing the Covid-19 epidemic, President Duterte expressed optimism that the Narvacan Farmers Market will revitalize the local economy by showcasing local products, providing more employment opportunities, and attracting businesses in the region.
