NUH is the flagship hospital of the National University Health System and the principal teaching hospital for the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Its campus includes three national specialty centres, namely the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS), the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS) and the National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore (NUCOHS).

The hospital opened to the public and received its first patients on 24 June 1985, with the opening of two departments namely the Department of Medicine and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The hospital was then officially opened on 17 June 1986 by Goh Chok Tong, then First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NUH has its roots and origins in the University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, set up in 1952 at the Singapore General Hospital with Professor J A P Cameron as the Head of the Department. It was the earliest established orthopedic surgery service in the region. On 24 June 1985, the University Department moved into the newly-built National University Hospital, and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NUH was formally established under the leadership of Professor Kamal Bose.

Currently, the Department of Orthopedic Surgery is divided into 7 divisions: Adult Reconstruction & Joint Replacement Surgery, Foot and Ankle Surgery, Musculoskeletal Oncology, Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery, Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, Sports, Shoulder & Elbow Surgery and Spine Surgery.
