When the company was founded in March 1967, the company originally operated just two ships, but constantly expanded to finally celebrate its first 50 years of history in 2017, and ranking within the first 10 largest container shipping lines.

Currently, Pacific International Lines (PIL) is the largest carrier in Southeast Asia and ranks 12th among the world’s leading container carriers.

The company employs over 18,000 staff globally, regularly serving about 500 ports in nearly 100 countries worldwide with Mariana Express Lines (MELL) and Malaysia Shipping Corporation (MSCorp). The company mainly focuses on China, Asia, Africa, Middle East, Latin America and Oceania.

In addition to the core business of shipping, PIL also has a number of other business units such as container production, warehousing and logistics services.

PIL is one of the very first foreign shipping lines to enter China before the opening of the country. Currently, PIL offers customers 23 container liner sailings a week out of China, and it has 25 registered branches in the country, including its regional headquarters in Shanghai. PIL also jointly owns and operates 18 logistics centres in China. 

Apart from China, PIL also has a strong presence in Africa. PIL started to serve Africa in the 1970s using general cargo vessels, today, PIL’s services cover close to 30 countries in Africa, with focus on East, West and South Africa, and has 12 container liner and feeder services a week out of Africa.
