Krating Daeng s a sweetened, non-carbonated energy drink developed by Chaleo Yoovidhya. The drink’s name literally translates to “Red Bull”, and the logo underlies its branding, with two charging bulls representing power, red signifying perseverance, and the backdrop of the sun symbolising energy. Krating Daeng became the basis for the creation of the best-selling energy drink in the world, Red Bull.

Krating Daeng was first launched in 1975 with ingredients containing water, cane sugar, caffeine, taurine, inositol and B-vitamins. It was introduced in Thailand in 1976 as a refreshment for rural Thai labourers.

Dietrich Mateschitz, an Austrian businessman, on a trip to Thailand tried Krating Daeng and found it cured his jet lag. He worked with Yoovidhya to be able to create a drink suitable for Western palates. In 1984, the two founded Red Bull GmbH in 1984 in Fuschl am See, Salzburg, Austria. In 1987, the company sold the first can of Red Bull in Europe.

Although Krating Daeng and Red Bull are aimed at two different markets and with slightly different formulas, both are energy drinks with the symbol of two red charging bulls. In 2021 Red Bull sold 9.804 billion cans of water worldwide, bringing the company’s profits up again.
