This is a Yellow Meranti tree (species: Shorea faguetiana) with a measured height of 100.8 meters. It is also considered the second tallest tree in the world, just behind Hyperion, the 115.92 meter Coast redwood tree in California’s Redwood National Park.

As the first and only recorded tropical tree exceeds 100 Metres, this tallest tropical tree is named as “Menara”, which means Tower in Malay language. Menara is also the tallest flowering plant on earth. In 2014, it’s spotted on a 33 degree angled slope by laser scanner of an airplane that surveyed the rainforest of Rhino Ridge near Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC).

Although discovered in 2014, it was not until 2019 that the exact height of the tree was measured by a professional tree climbers.

Before Menara appeared, there were many Yellow Meranti trees with outstanding height found in Sabah, such as Lahad Datu tree with a height of 93 meters near Ulu Purut Research Station (UPRS) Camp, or a Yellow Meranti tree 96.9 meters-tall near the entrance of Tawau Hills Park. In particular, the yellow Meranti tree a native tree species lives in Borneo, peninsular Malaysia and parts of Thailand.
