History and Architecture

The Peranakan Museum is located within the former Tao Nan School at 39 Armenian Street. This building was constructed in 1912 and designed in the “Eclectic Classical” style. It was converted into the Asian Civilisations Museum in 1994, then developed into the Peranakan Museum in 2008.

On February 17, 2023, after nearly four years of renovation, the museum reopened its doors to welcome visitors.

The Peranakan Museum introduces the diverse culture of Peranakan communities in Southeast Asia through exhibitions and displays focusing on themes related to their origins, family life, community, as well as Peranakan customs and traditions. The museum also hosts daily programs including guided tours conducted by museum volunteers.

Peranakan Culture

Peranakan culture is a fusion of elements from Chinese, Malay, and Indian cultures. The Peranakan Museum showcases this culture through ten permanent galleries, interactive and multimedia exhibitions, and a 12-day wedding diorama.

The museum is open daily from 10 am to 7 pm, with extended hours until 9 pm on Fridays, and stops admitting visitors 30 minutes before closing to ensure a complete experience for visitors. Ticket prices for tourists are $12, while students/seniors/disabled individuals are $8, and children under 6 enter for free.

The Peranakan Museum is not just a place to explore Peranakan culture but also to understand more about the history and heritage of Singapore and Southeast Asia. Visit the Peranakan Museum to experience an essential part of this diverse culture.
