It is a city which houses historic ruins and artifacts which play a major role in Thailand’s culture. It is famous for monkeys, architectural remains of Khmer empire, rock climbing and sunflower fields. It can be easily done as a day trip if you are planning to come from nearby cities. Unlike other tourist cities, Lopburi has a very laid back atmosphere and it rarely experiences any influx of tourists

Phra Prang Sam Yot

Located in the Wichayen road in Lopburi, it is known to the visitors as the infamous monkey temple due to the abundant monkeys that have made it their home.

It is also called as the monkey temple and it predominantly contains the ruins which are influenced by the Khmer architecture. It has 3 prangs which are 800 years old and out of the three prangs, one Prang is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the other two being dedicated to Lord Buddha. The annual Lopburi Monkey Festival is held here in the last week of November. It is good to be cautious at this temple as there are numerous monkeys playing around and trying to steal food and belongings from the visitors. 

King Narai’s Palace

Also known as the Somdet Phra Narai National Museum, this palace-turned-museum houses some of the ancient royal artefacts. Housing over 1864 artefacts, King Narai’s Palace is the Chantarapisarn pavilion of the palace that was turned into a museum.

An architectural blend of Thai and European elements, King Narai’s Palace was built by King Narai himself during his reign. This palace that once led as a charming administrative palace of the king was abandoned for over two centuries upon King Narai’s demise. King Narai’s Palace was further restored by King Mongkut towards the end of the 19th century as Lopburi City Hall. Along with a hired English guide, there is also a bilingual educational video played for 5 minutes in the chamber. 

Ban Vichayen

Architectural ruins situated in Lopburi town. Ban Vicheyan was built by King Narai as a residence for his French Ambassador, Chevalier Chaumont. The place consists of the ruins of the house he lived in, a banquet hall and a church surrounded by high brick walls.

Sunflower fields

A visual delight for those who love to see the flowers in full bloom. A number of sunflower fields are located in Lopburi and people who arrive by train from Bangkok can get a nice view of the sunflower farms. One can rent a motorbike or a car and explore the fields and it provides a great chance to click breathtaking and colourful pictures. Some farms sell sunflower products like seeds, oil, printed tees and umbrellas.
