In 1913, Liem Seeng Tee founded his own company and started to produce the first clove cigarettes called Dji Sam Soe – hand-rolled tobacco. Although many other clove cigarettes followed, they did not stop the spread of Dji Sam Soe tobacco. In the 1930s, Liem Seeng Tee adopted the Indonesian name Sampoerna meaning “perfection” as his family name, thus becoming the company’s namesake.

Sampoerna had a near bankruptcy period because Liem Seeng Tee’s successors chose the wrong tobacco to invest in. Fortunately, his youngest son promptly turned the situation around.

In May 2005, Sampoerna officially became a subsidiary of Philip Morris International – a multinational cigarette manufacturing company.

Sampoerna offers a wide range of clove cigarettes ranging from premium to affordable. They are not only famous in Indonesia but also known in many other countries.
