Around the 4th and 5th of the Lunar New Year is the time when the Chinese community in Penang and many other places in Malaysia hold the brilliant "Chap Goh Mei" lantern festival. This is a custom brought by the Chinese and Vietnamese community living in Malaysia.

They write wishes for good luck, health, and a full life for themselves and their families in a piece of paper, then pasted them onto lanterns, then carried lanterns to temples to be blessed by the gods.

Chap Goh Mei is also a festival for single girls. On the occasion of the Lunar New Year, unmarried girls will come and throw their wishful tangerines into the sea. There are many tourists, especially girls who come here to pray for good luck for the new year.

The "Chap Goh Mei" festival is also considered as a Valentine's Day in countries where the festival is held.

Although "Chap Goh Mei" is not a traditional festival of Malaysians, it is still enjoyed by many Malaysians as well as domestic and foreign tourists.
