This tribe was discovered in the 1970s. They live in a tribal social organization and are one of the most primitive and wild tribes in the world. According to the Indonesian census, this tribe has nearly 3,000 members scattered throughout the forests in Papua.

The Korowai people once had the custom of headhunting and cannibalism. Those of the Korowai tribe specialize in living in trees with primitive customs. They live off the flora and fauna in the forest. The Korowai have a nomadic lifestyle, living off hunting and gathering. Men hunt for food, while women gather.

In terms of social organization, to this day, many people in the tribe still maintain ancient lifestyles. The Korowai live closely with each other, in clusters, usually 3 – 4 men with their wives and children. Each Korowai family has about 8 members and each family has its own house.

In terms of clothing, the Korowai only cover their bodies with banana leaves. Men’s noses are usually decorated with items made from bat teeth, while on the stomach, chest, and many other places on the body are tattoos. Due to lack of scientific knowledge, tribes in the deep forests of Indonesia believe that people die because of ghosts. The Korowai believe that anyone killed by a demon is eaten by tribe members, a ritual to protect the rest.

Since the 1990s, the Korowai people began to have more contact with the outside world by cooperating with local tour operators to organize tours around the village. The latest news about the Korowai tribe shows that they still maintain their traditional lifestyle. A new set of photos of the Korowai tribe has been taken by Italian photographer Gianluca Chiodini. The 41-year-old reporter spent several days walking in the forest to find this special tribe.
